GENRIC’s Leadership Program to drive strategy and innovation as key tenets

The ongoing transformation of the insurance industry has intensified with monumental shifts in technology and AI, heightened competition, changing customer expectations, and escalating regulatory requirements. The success or failure of the insurance sector hinges on the ability of its leaders and people to embrace the essential technological, cultural, and structural innovation needed. In this landscape, strong and forward-thinking leadership, coupled with a compelling vision and strategy, is more crucial than ever to embrace change, leverage the benefits of automation and technology, and actively engage with innovation for a promising and sustainable business future.

It is on this premise that GENRIC Insurance Company embarked on its 2023 Leadership Program, with the pillars of innovation and strategy as key tenets of the program curriculum for its 15 delegates.  All participants were recruited from within the business after a rigorous application and shortlisting process, and forms part of the firm’s succession planning.

“GENRIC is well known for its approach to technology innovation in its business models, and our approach to leadership development is no different. Our leadership program is designed to give ambitious employees an opportunity to get immersed in our innovation journey and strategic planning for the business, nurturing a mindset that sees challenges as opportunities and giving them an opportunity to nurture and flex their leadership capabilities.  The program takes place over 11 months, and demands cultural exposure, strategic insights, and innovative thinking as our delegates are challenged to navigate the complexities of the business world. As they work through the program and develop their skills and knowledge, we are also seeing the positive impact manifest in their respective departments, driving progress, fostering innovation, and seeing the emergence of great leadership potential in our people,” explains Melanie du Plessis, Head of Human Capital at GENRIC Insurance Company Limited (GENRIC). The 2023 Leadership Program Experience

GENRIC’s leadership program is a comprehensive blend of accredited modules and in-house developed courses. Over the span of 11 months, participants undergo a transformative journey divided into four distinct phases, each with a unique focus and objective:

  • Phase 1: Igniting Cognitive Growth with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP): The program commenced with a deep exploration of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This phase gauges cognitive shifts, setting the stage for personal growth and development.
  • Phase 2: Ten Behavioural Modules for Enhanced Management Skills: Building upon the foundational insights gained in Phase 1, Phase 2 encompasses ten behavioural modules. These modules, carefully developed in-house, focus on enhancing crucial management skills. They provide a platform for delegates to refine their abilities in leading teams effectively.
  • Phase 3: Nurturing Innovation and Strategy: Innovation and Strategy Unit Standards take centre stage in Phase 3, facilitated by The Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS). Delegates dive deep into crucial aspects of fostering innovation within their teams and developing effective strategies to navigate the complex business environment.
  • Phase 4: The Experiential Journey of Personal Mastery: Representing the apex of personal mastery, Phase 4 is the culmination of this transformative journey. It combines immersive encounters and focused classroom facilitation, providing participants with the tools and insights needed to excel in their professional endeavours.

The leadership program combines immersive experiences, extensive classroom facilitation and case study development focusing on critical elements such as diversity, developing a growth mindset, innovation, leadership, social entrepreneurship, strategy and networking. It culminates with each delegate presenting case studies to the exco, backed by their research and proposed strategy to tackle specified business challenges they were challenged to work on.

“Fundamentally, our leadership program is about fostering organisational success by cultivating and honing the skills necessary within our people. It’s about providing a structured framework in a safe environment for ambitious and talented individuals who want to develop essential leadership qualities such as strategic thinking, effective communication, decision-making, and team management. By investing in leadership development, we get to ensure a pipeline of competent leaders from within, while creating a positive and motivating workplace culture where our people know that there are clear developmental career pathways within our business and the insurance sector. Ultimately, this is about building long-term organisational resilience in the face of challenges by empowering and growing our people, from within the business,” concludes Melanie.
